Last night, the Residence Night was quite a success, with many students participating in the balsamic and olive oil tastings (want your student to bring you back some truffle oil? They now know how to spot the good kind!). I also ran a peaceful yoga session with some adventurous students, which we did under the stars, and we dedicated our practices to our families, as far away as you all are.
As for today, it's been great so far!
After an art and Italian-language-filled morning of classes, the students are now enjoying their afternoon activities, which include free time, climbing the Duomo with Lindsay or visiting the Mercato Centrale with William to learn about all of the great locally grown products and the importance in supporting farmers' markets.
In just a minute, those students who are going to Rome will meet with me to discuss the trip. We depart tomorrow! This will be a whirlwind tour of the most historically important sites in Rome and Vatican City--I am especially excited for the visit to the Galleria Borghese which houses several breathtaking Bernini scultpures, whose beauty even profoundly impacts the least artistically-inclined Abbey Roader (me).
After our afternoon electives, we'll be having a healthy dinner of fresh local products on the terrace that the students requested (this includes melon wrapped in prosciutto, and a variety of delicious salads like spinach, cheese, and walnut salad, a sun-dried tomato and kalamata olive salad, and caprese salad (basil and tomatoes with mozzarella di buffala)!
This evening a group of us will see Macbeth presented in the Bargello, Shakespeare's famed tragedy. Another group will accompany Stefano to a gelato tasting (never tried tomato and basil gelato before? This is your chance!) And finally, for those who enjoy exploring the piazzas, there will be free time in the center of town, with a staff member.
I'll have many more photos tomorrow! Til then!
Janet
